This is the first post for Tool Tuesdays! Every now and then on a Tuesday, we’ll mention a particular tool that we love for one of these aspects of digital marketing ROI: credibility, visibility, usability or accountability.

Today’s tool is SEO Spider by Screaming Frog. It is software that is downloaded to your desktop – whether that is PC, Mac or Linux – and can be used to quickly crawl, analyze and audit any publicly available website from an onsite SEO perspective.

Here is a list of some of the data I use most frequently:

  • Page Titles – Missing, duplicate, long or short.
  • Meta Description – Missing, duplicate, long or short.
  • H1 – Missing, duplicate, multiple.
  • Meta Robots – Index, noindex, follow, nofollow, etc.
  • External Links – All external links and their status codes.
  • Images – Missing alt text.
  • Upload a list of URLs to check for broken links.

See their actual site for a more extensive list – better yet, download the free version of the tool (it never expires and you do not have to register). Many people can get away with the free version of the tool for a very long time. Reasons to upgrade to the paid version include:

  • The free version is restricted to crawling a maximum of 500 URLs in a single crawl.
  • The paid version gives you full access to the configuration – for example you can specify that you want to start the crawl in a specific folder of a website such as /en/ or /fr/.
  • You can search for custom text in the coding of a page – for example Google Analytics code

That’s it for today’s Tool Tuesdays! If you have used Screaming Frog, share your thoughts! Have a request for an upcoming tool review? Share your thoughts 🙂
