Stop Googling yourself. Seriously. Stop it.
Searching for your organization or company on Google to determine your ranking is not a quantifiable method of measuring your site’s performance. To tell you the truth, it’s an action that hardly justifies you spending time on it.
Let me explain why with a basic example.
Meet George.
George owns ABC Windows. He installs windows, siding and doors and boasts years of experience in the industry. Two years ago his nephew built a website which he promised would drive clients and phone calls, yet, George’s phone is not exactly ringing off the hook. George decided to Google himself to see where this flashy site of his is ranked. He types “ABC windows”. Not great, he thinks.
Scrolling the pages of results he finds his listing. There sits ABC Windows – below 15+ windows companies in his city and under a surprising number of sites dealing with computer operating systems. His bubble of expectations for his site’s performance has officially burst.
George is on the right track in caring about his site’s performance. But, he is steering himself awry in thinking search engine rank is the be-all of generating client leads. Google’s ranking algorithms have become increasingly sophisticated, injecting more variables into the mix including but not limited to click history, geographic location, social media activity and choice of device. All of these factors combine to skew search engine results. So, you see, the rank George is frowning at on his screen does not properly equate to how every user – or potential client – is finding him.
Don’t give up George! At the end of the day, what if you only had time to answer the phone as opposed to Googling yourself? It is not ranking you are looking to ace – it’s conversions. Traffic drives people to your site; conversions get them to do what you want them to do. And, with that bit of intel you are already steering your site’s performance back in the right direction.
