How to Optimize Your Blog for Search Engines
Darren Rowse is the blogger behind the scenes at ProBlogger.net and author of How to Optimize Your Blog for Search Engines, a much longer (and more informative) post that I am summarizing here.
We speak about many of these techniques from time to time but it is good to see the list in print!
SEO is often divided into two categories: on page optimization and off page optimization.
Off Page SEO Techniques
Pretty much summed up as incoming links, the best inbound links have three main qualities to them:
1. they are from higher ranked sites than your own
2. they are relevant to the topic you are writing about
3. they link to you using relevant keywords to your page
How do you generate these links to your blog?
- Quality Content
- Notify Relevant Bloggers of your content
- Directories
- Inter-link your Blogs
- Buy Links
- Swap Links
On Page SEO Techniques
- Keyword Rich Content
- Themed sites - we’re not talking WordPress themes but subject themes here. Own a niche rather than trying to be a blog of all trades
- Site Engine Friendly Design
- Interlink your Site
- Blog regularly
- Outbound Links
- Keyword Rich Domain Name
- Register your Domain for a Lengthy Period
- One topic per post
- Write optimal length posts
- Avoid Duplicate content
- Ping
- Submit your RSS to MyYahoo
- Quantities of Content
- Submit to Search Engines - we say do this via a sitemap for better results!
This is a high level overview of things that need to be considered when trying to increase the search engine visibility of your blog. Darren goes into much greater detail including links and examples.
If I were taking my own medicine, I would not post this duplicate content (it has been edited and trimmed down slightly), would link to other relevant posts that are of the same subject as this one and would perhaps spend more time on links!
Mom-Blogging
Johnson and Johnson is entering the blogosphere with a blog directory service, designed to be an easy way for moms to find and connect with other moms.
From their site:
We want to help more mom bloggers reach more readers (and get more traffic). And if you don’t have a blog, it’s a great place to start one. We want to help moms join the conversation.
Interesting idea for sure and I somehow feel it will be successful. The success could be tied to the big brand that will be running the directory and the domain it is on as well as the concept of a place for mom’s. What makes one site more likely to succeed in this sphere? I would say it depends upon the measure of success - in this case Johnson and Johnson have a vehicle for branding their various baby products in front of a targeted audience and being a big brand, would have experience in media buying, etc. that they could bring to the directory as well as potentially allowing mom’s to be affiliates and promote J&J products.
The Wikablog - Weblog Directory
While there are blog directories out there, there is a new one that has just hit the web! The Wikablog - Weblog Directory is a bit different from other blog directories in that this is a Wiki - it is built by the readers! There are 128 blogs listed so far and adding your blog is quite easy - they provide you with a template to copy and paste so you only have to make some minor edits.
Get on over there and add your blog to the Wikablog!
